This week as part of my
home schooling work I had to read a book and write a review on it.The book I
choose to read was part one of the collection from The Chronicles of Narnia
: The Magicians Nephew.
This is part one in a
seven series collection and was written by the author C.S Lewis. The book was
originally published in 1955, then again in 1980 and the edition that I have
read was published in 2001 by Harper Collins Publishers.
The book was very easy to
read, and it was interesting from the start. It is about a young boy called
Digory who lives with his Aunt Letty and his uncle Andrew who is a petty
magician in London. The boy’s father is away in India working and his mother is
very ill and dying. He meets and gets friendly with a little girl called Polly.
One night when they were exploring the attics
of the old houses, they lived in they accidently ended up in Uncle Andrews
forbidden room. Uncle Andrew (The magician) shows them magic rings that he has
and tells them that if they wear the rings they will be taken to a new world
that they can travel to and from by wearing the green and yellow rings.
The children do as the
uncle has told them and on their adventures they encounter new worlds and new
characters including the witch Jadis and A lion ,they travel to new and
interesting worlds including the ” Dying World of Charn and the New World of
Narnia”. They learn lots of things about what is right and wrong in the world.
This is a book that gets
your attention from the start and makes you want to read more. In the very
first few lines of the story the author says
“this is a very
important story “(pg.9)
and this makes the reader
feel that they need to read more to find out what it is that is so important.
Throughout the book there are other things that the author says to keep the
reader interested and to introduce mystery to the story. Chapter five is called
“The Deplorable
Word “(pg.68)
“she even knew that I had
the secret of the deplorable word … what is it? said Digory …That is the secret
of secrets, said the Queen…(pg.77)
This part of the story is
about Jadis the wicked witch and her sister. The two sisters were at war with
each other for control of the City of Charn and Jadis kills her sister and
destroys the city by using the Deplorable Word. She justifies what she
has done by describing her sister as evil, but the reader never finds
out the sister’s name or why she was so evil. This adds interest to the story
and keeps the reader reading.
The reader never actually
finds out what that word is, it remains a mystery. This is something that keeps
the readers interest and makes them want to read more to find out what that
word really is.
I think this is a really
good book and it is suitable for my age (10years) because I found it easy to
read. I could understand the language that the author used, and I could follow
the story easily.
I found the story to be
very interesting and it captured my imagination because it was full of magic
and mystery.
The characters were all
very interesting. I really liked the characters of Polly and Digory as they
were the same age as me and liked doing things that I like to do, this kept me
interested.
I also liked the
character uncle Andrew because he is the one who introduced the children to the
rings, and this is what led them to the
“worlds in between “
As he was a magician it
makes the reader feel that anything could happen next and in the case of this
story that is exactly what happens.
I do not like Jadis as
she is mean and evil. She kills her sister and destroyed the world of Charn.
When she comes to London, she causes trouble for everyone as she wants to rule
the city and the world. As she is one of the main characters, she is
interesting, and she does play a major part in the story.
In general, this was a
great book it is very suitable for young children to read. The story is full of
mystery and magic and it kept me interested. There are six more books in the
series, and I cannot wait to read them.
By reading this book I learned lots of new
words and in doing this book review I got to exercise my typing skills.
