David's brilliant project all about Penguins (World Penguin Day is April 25th)

Penguins

What Are Penguins?

Penguins are birds. They can’t fly but they are excellent swimmers.

Where Do They Live

There are no penguins in the north of the Equator (except for zoos).
They can live in warmer places like South America and Australia  as well as cold places like Antarctica so long as they are near the ocean because they spend most of their time in the water.

What Do They Eat?

Penguins eat fish (a lot) they also eat squid and krill (which is small shrimp in a big colony).
Baby penguins eat vomit. The adult eats the food and it gets mashed up in it’s stomach. The adult then coughs it up for the chick.

Types Of Penguins

There are 17 types of penguin.
They are:
Fairy penguin (smallest penguin)
<-- they are also nocturnal(unlike all of the other penguins)

Galápagos

Rockhopper

Fiordland

Erect-crested

Chinstrap (they look like army men)

Humboldt

Adélie

Macaroni

Yellow -eyed (save them they are the most endangered ones with only 2000 left in the wild)

Gentoo

King

And the mighty emperor

Biggest penguin (the size of an average 7 year old)

Penguins are in danger swimming in the ocean because there are predators in the ocean but that doesn't mean that they are safe on land. There are Glalápagos Hawks so they better watch out (if you think that if other penguins are safe in the Antarctic well think not there are other hawks there) and there's the sally lightfoot crab that takes penguins eggs for food and even baby penguins. Sometimes the sally crab buries himself in the ground to pretend to be a rock.
There are also sea predators in the sea; for example the leopard seals, they eat penguins >:(
and killer whales (they are ok some of the time because they eat leopard seals) and the most deadly of them all are people.
When oil spills from ships it poisons the penguins and damages their feathers so they are no longer waterproof.

In other countries like New Zealand they chop down their homes just so they can have firewood.
>:(

Protecting penguins :)

Lucky for penguins there are some good people that are helping penguins all over the world.
From oil spills that happen or just them being endangered like Yellow-eyed penguins
And even saving penguins that are already not endangered like the fairy penguins.
